The poem “A Song of Everlasting Regret”(Chang Hen Ge) was written by Bai JuYi in Tang Dynasty. When Bai JuYi was alive, Chang Hen Ge has been transmitted to Korea and Japan.
This article discusses the process of classical of Chang Hen Ge not only by transcribing but also by illustrations.
Enjoying the romantic love story of Emperor Xuan Zhong and Lady Yang, the Japanese painters created the Chang Hen Ge paintings since Heian Period (794-1185). However, ancient Chinese and Korean literati emphasized the allegory and admonishment of painting, the Chang Hen Ge paintings were not as popular as the painting of “Emperor Xuan Zhong’s Flight to Shu”(明皇幸蜀圖).
